Description
The Islamic society of Peel, also known as Makki Masjid, is one of the pioneer Masjids in the Greater Toronto area. Brampton, in the 1970's was only a town with a handful of Muslims. For the Friday prayer these Muslims would drive a long way to the Jame Masjid in Toronto. In 1978, Muslims families began gathering in the Civic centre for Zhur prayers on Sundays. It was then that the Islamic Society of Peel was established, and in 1981 the property on which the Masjid now stands was purchased. The piece of land at 8450 Torbram Road had a house (which is still in use today) had a garage and a little farm. The house was converted into a Masjid and the remaining property was transformed into a parking facility. As the community grew and Brampton developed from a town to a city, it became increasingly difficult to house the Muslim congregation coming for the Juma Salah. This led to brothers praying uncomfortably outside the Masjid and in portable rooms during the winter. The demand for a larger facility was ever increasing. Eventually, plans were made for a Masjid to be built. Today by the grace and mercy of Allah (SWT), Makki Masjid stands as a large and beautiful white stoned building complimented with a green dome, which can house approximately 1500 people.
