Canadian Muslim Organizations, Leaders & Imams Issue Call to Action to Eradicate Domestic Violence

Published: 1 years 188 days ago
" Prominent national as well as local Muslim organizations, community leaders and activists, as well as Imams from across Canada are joining together today to issue a Call to Action to Eradicate Domestic Violence. This Call highlights six ways Canadian Muslims can intensify their efforts to abolish all forms of domestic violence. As a first step, it calls on Imams across Canada to draw attention to December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women by devoting their sermons on Friday December 9 to the issue.

Call to Action to Eradicate Domestic Violence

As October, the Domestic Violence Awareness month, has ended and we now approach December 6, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, Muslim Canadians reflect on the reality of domestic violence within our own communities, compounded by abhorrent and yet persistent pre-Islamic practices rooted in the misguided notion of restoring family honour.

As Muslims, we base our ethics and behaviour on the teachings of the Quran and the authenticated example of the Prophet Muhammad, who never hit a woman and taught the men that “the best amongst you is he who treats women the best”. The Quran unequivocally emphasizes the sanctity of all life, forbids all forms of coercion in matters of religion, and reminds us all that each of us is accountable for our actions directly to God, the only Judge.

There is no room within these teachings for any person, by virtue of gender or position within the family, to seize control over the life and bodily security of another.  Domestic violence and, in the extreme, practices such as killing to “restore family honour” violate clear and non-negotiable Islamic principles, and so we categorically condemn all forms of domestic violence.

We the undersigned declare our commitment to intensify our efforts to eradicate domestic violence from our communities through:

  1. Working within our community and with other communities to raise awareness of harmful (and sometimes lethal) attitudes that lead to this violence.

  2. Working within our communities to raise awareness about the serious psychological, judicial, social and religious consequences of such practices, through Friday sermons, public lectures, workshops, and other means.

  3. Morally opposing the use of the word “honour” when describing such killings to ensure no positive connotation is implied directly or indirectly in connection to such heinous crimes.

  4. Working with community leaders and Imams in order to ensure that they are equipped with the necessary resources and training so that they can offer mediation, conflict resolution, and domestic violence counselling in a manner that reflects professional standards, contemporary research, and religious scholarship.

  5. Educating parents and youth about existing resources that can help them deal with intergenerational conflicts and misogynist leanings far before it gets to the point of violent confrontation.

  6. Teaching parents and youth how to deal with intergenerational conflicts and misogynist leanings.

As a first step, starting immediately and specifically on December 9, we commit ourselves to addressing this issue at all levels, including and especially within our Friday sermons, which must highlight Islamic perspectives on domestic abuse, perspectives that condemn all forms of violence against women and children, most especially threatening, abusing, and killing women in the name of protecting the family’s honour. As Muslims and as Canadians, we stand with all Canadians and pledge to combat domestic violence in all its manifestations, wherever and whenever they arise.

Please visit at www.galibramathan.com News about Somalia I, Galib Ramathan declare that the Story mentioned is true-- My name is Galib Ramathan. I was born in Mogadishu, Somalia on January 1st, 1981. I am sick I have a mental problem I am not feeling well, I suffer mental illness called Schizophrenia; I am unable to work or to go to school. Presently, I am taking a medication. 2 Today I am not in good health. I am emotionally handicapped due to civil war in Somalia. My mental was affected by the civil war in Somalia. I have been sick for the past 22 years since in 1991. 3 Presently, I am living in Canada. I don't have a life in this country. I spend thinking about myself of not knowing what to do. I can't eat properly and I cannot sleep because of the stress. 4 Since when I six years old I started my education for elementary school in Somalia. I finished but I didn't complete my secondary Education because of the political situation in my country Somalia. When the military government collapsed since that time we don't have a central government since in 1991. 5 When I was six years old, I was enrolled in the Madarasa, I was taught Qur'an in the evenings and consequently started my formal schooling. 6 In the city of Mogadishu, a young girl was my neighbor when I lived in Somalia. This young girl went one day to the market place to buy goods. While she was in the market, a missile was launched in their home where the rest of her family lived. She was fortunate because she was not in the house when the missile hit them. She lost her family. This tragedy happened in December 1990. However, when we released that a missile has been launched 7 We walked up to the garage that was closer to us, which was situated in the city of Afgoye, about 30 km south of Mogadishu, Somalia. The owner of this garage was a religious man. Who offered us a place to stay, While we were there, we stayed one night, and next morning we took a bus from Afgoye to Mudul Barawe, where we stayed other night, next morning we took a bus, which was we existed on un-cooked rice and some water. Always, when we meet new people we were told the war is getting worse 8 the civil war intensified and heavy guns were heard everywhere and we were unable to get charcoal and gas to cook our food. In the city of Kismaya there were dead bodies on the streets and roads everywhere, it was difficult to travel alone in the street of Kismayo 9 When the gunfire stopped in Kismaya, we took a car that was going to Libay, Kenya. When we reached Libay, Kenya we lived there for four months. We existed, the little assistance we received from the UNHCR workers who used to tell us to lines up for food, so to get our rations. In addition, we stayed long lines in order to receive little water. 10 I hope that the fighting stops soon. One day. I hope to be able to go back. I want to use what I have learned here to help rebuild my country. However I like my country Somalia nobody hates his country. I like my people but I can't do anything for them but every time I pray I beg God for my country Somalia. 11 I never suffered any disease or illness when I was in Africa it doesn't matter what part of Africa 12 Somalia is a poor country however everybody is happy and healthy nobody worries about anything because there is no stress, frustration and depression. I never took a medication in my life when I was in Africa it doesn't matter what part of Africa 13 When we were in Somalia, we had faith and strong culture. In My view people nowadays don't have faith. I have overcome many problems, because I prayed so to beg God for my country. Today we cannot go back to Somalia unless the situation changes. 14 The late president of Somalia was Mohamed Siad Barre. He died in 1995, in Nigeria with heart Attack. Mohamed Siad Barre he became president in 1969. Mohamed Siad Barre, the last Somali dictator, the country for 22 years. 15 In my viewpoint, Mohamed Siad Barre, he was great president of Somalia. Look at Somalia now it had no peace. 16 I am experiencing a lot of terrible things back home in Somalia. I am the lucky one thanks God His Grace in His mercy. 17 I used to live in Dar-Es Salaam, Tanzania for 18 years ago before I arrived in Canada that time I was healthy and strong but now I am not 18 If I remember how we lived in Tanzania sometimes I cry. Tanzanian people most of them are Muslims and every corner is mosque and you hear the prayer. 19 Tanzania is a poor country however everybody is happy and healthy nobody worries about anything because there is no stress, frustration and depression. 20 Then I was in Africa I never took medication in my life it was my first time I had seen a good life. Somalia became independent in 1960 21 Today I am not living in the right place at this moment that means I don't live in Muslim country. The people living in Tanzania they know more about Islam because they are living in the right place. 22 Islam cares much for maintaining the highest level of social solidarity and strength among the members of the society. It goes without saying that spending money on charitable deeds, such as helping the needy, alleviating the pains of the distressed and support those who are in need will be upon them in this world and hereafter. 23 Safwan ibn Salim related that the prophet said; anyone who looks after and works for a widow and a poor person is like a warrior fighting for Allah’s cause, or like a person who fasts during the day and prays all night (Bukhari) Anas related that the prophet said; if any Muslim plants something or sows seed from which a man, a bird or an animal eats, it counts a charity for him. (Bukhari, Muslim) 24 Abu Hurairah (May Allah Be pleased with Him) reported; the prophet (peace Be upon Him) said, one who strives to help the widows and the poor is like who fights in the way of Allah, The narrator said; I think that he (Prophet (PBUH) added also; I shall regard him as the one who stands up (prayer without rest as the one who observes fast continuously (AL-Bukhari) 25 Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him) says have mercy on those upon the earth; and Allah will have mercy on you? 26 Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon Him) says you have to pray five times a day and you have to pay the Zakat and you have to fast the month of Ramadan and you can go Hajj if you can afford? 27 This life is only for temporary, this is not the real life, the real life will be started when you die, and before you die you need to get good deeds before the date of judgment. Whatever good deeds you get in this world you will get hereafter. 28 Now I am a poor social support in Canada. I am not will be able to get enough money to survive there. There is no agency or governments assist me financially. 29 Tanzania has a beautiful Island called Zanzibar and beautiful Indian Ocean and beautiful Lakes called Lake Tanganyika and Lake Victoria and beautiful Mountain called Kilimanjaro Mountain. Kilimanjaro Mountain is the highest mountain in this world. 30 If Somalia had a peace we would like to go back to Somalia there is no better place than Somalia for us. 31 I would like to be independent in my life I want to get a better life in the future. Home and country is the best Please visit at www. galibramathan.com Nouvelles sur la Somalie I, Galib Ramathan déclarer que l'histoire dit est vrai - Mon nom est Galib Ramathan. Hivi sasa, I am kuchukua dawa. In the name of Allah the most Gracious most merciful------- December 24, 2012 Galib Malik Ramathan 1626 Weston Road Unit B1 Toronto, Ontario, M9N 1T9, Canada E-Mail: galibramathan20@hotmail.com To Whom It May Concern: My Dear Brothers/Sisters in Islam Asalamu Alaikum wa-Rahmatullahi wa-Barakathu My name is Galib Ramathan. I was born in Mogadishu, Somalia on January 1st 1981. I am from a poor Muslim family. I have a problem and I need some help from my Muslim brothers and sisters. And I am currently a Canadian citizen. I am from a low income family and in need of financial assistance. I am sick and suffering from a mental illness called Schizophrenia; I am unable to work or to go to school because of this illness. Presently, I am taking a medication and in care of a family doctor in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. My health was affected by the civil war in Somalia when I was ten years old and its deteriorating day by day. I have been sick for the past 21 years since 1991. Today I am not in good health. I am emotionally handicapped due to civil war in Somalia. Presently, I am residing in Toronto for the past 17 years by myself with no family members. My family is in East Africa Dar-Es Salaam, Tanzania, I have been away from my family since 1994; we were separated because of the civil war in Somalia. I have decided to move to Dar-Es Salaam, Tanzania permanently to join my family, I never took a medication in my life when I was in Africa it doesn’t matter what part of Africa. Now if I go back to Tanzania my personal health problem will improve greatly. I will feel much better. I am going to Tanzania in order to improve my health condition. I am frustrated, lonely and depressed living in Canada alone without my family I can’t eat properly and I cannot sleep because of the stress, I believe I will be of in Tanzania with my family as I am ill and they can take care of me. I strongly believe my health will improve with my family around; I lived in Dar-Es Salaam, Tanzania for many years before coming to Canada and that time I was healthy and I never suffered from any disease or illness Alhamdulillah. I am not will be unable to get enough money to survive there. I am in need of financial assistance in order to move back to Tanzania, as I am unable to work due to my illness and I cannot survive in Africa as there is no agency or government that can assist me financially. Today I don't have a life in this country. I spend thinking about myself of not knowing what to do. I would like to achieve a better life as well as independence. Now the problem I have is I am not will be able to get enough money to survive there. I cannot survive in Africa without any support. I am a poor social support in Canada. Tanzania is a poor country however everybody is happy and healthy nobody worries about anything because there is no stress, frustration and depression. I get depressed if the weather is too cold especially during the wintertime but African season is always summer there is no winter in Africa. Today I am not living in the right place at this moment that means I don’t live in Muslim country. Tanzania every corner is mosque and you hear the prayer. Tanzania is a peaceful country. Tanzania is wonderful place to live Islam cares much for maintaining the highest level of social solidarity and strength among the members of the society. It goes without saying that spending money on charitable deeds, such as helping the needy, alleviating the pains of the distressed and support those who are in need will be upon them in this world and hereafter. Safwan ibn Salim related that the prophet said; anyone who looks after and works for a widow and a poor person is like a warrior fighting for Allah’s cause, or like a person who fasts during the day and prays all night (Bukhari) Anas related that the prophet said; if any Muslim plants something or sows seed from which a man, a bird or an animal eats, it counts a charity for him. (Bukhari, Muslim) Abu Hurairah (May Allah Be pleased with Him) reported; the prophet (peace Be upon Him) said, one who strives to help the widows and the poor is like who fights in the way of Allah, The narrator said; I think that he (Prophet (PBUH) added also; I shall regard him as the one who stands up (prayer without rest as the one who observes fast continuously (AL-Bukhari) The weather in Tanzania is good and I will be more active unlike here I cannot stand the winter season and the more I stay inside my apartment due to the cold I get more stressed out and depressed. I am very happy to go back to Dar-Es Salaam, Tanzania to be with my family. I miss my family and I miss home. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me as soon as possible. Today I feel depressed and unhappy and I feel lonely. I am planning to go to Dar-Es Salaam, Tanzania on September 1st, 2013 insha-Allah. I am happy to go to Tanzania to be with my family and share my life with them to feel much better. I would like to closer to my family. I am frustrated living in Canada alone without my family. I have this problem for several years seeking for help. Our Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) says have mercy on those upon the earth; and Allah will have mercy on you? I need your help and would you please help me in this situation? I would like to have a chance to live happily and to experience no frustration due to my illness. I am very desperate for your help. If you don’t help me, who will? Thank you, for your understanding and May Allah bless you and your family. Jazak Allah Khayran Yours truly Galib Ramathan

I would be much better for my health wise physical and mentally I will really appreciated for any help that I can get from you. I am in need urgent support and please try to assist me the best you can. Please don’t ignore me as long as we are Muslim brothers and sisters. Please try to help me as much as you can. I used to live in Dar-Es Salaam, Tanzania for 17 years ago before I arrived in Canada that time I was healthy and strong but now I am not. If I remember how we lived in Tanzania sometimes I cry. I have strong feelings going back to Tanzania for good. I am requesting any financial assistance to move back to Tanzania to survive there. I am requesting any Zakat. Whatever Zakat you can afford please send me a cheque with my name on it at above address on the top of this letter. Please the reason I send you this letter is to let you know about my situation as a brother. Anyway you can help me will be greatly appreciated. Any amount of money that I can get will be appreciated and I will pray for you and for myself for God to make it easy for me and bless whoever will be willing to assist me, reward them and make it easy upon them in this world and hereafter? I will not be unable to survive Tanzania without assistance. Please try your best to assist me. I am planning to go to Dar-Es Salaam, Tanzania on December 31, 2012 for insha-Allah. I am happy to go to Tanzania to be with my family and share my life with them to feel much better. I would like to closer to my family. I am frustrated living in Canada alone without my family. I have this problem for several years seeking for help. Muslim people are supposed to help each other when other brothers are in need. Allah says in the Quran please help and follow those who are in need and wherever you are helping each other? Our Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon Him) says have mercy on those upon the earth; and Allah will have mercy on you? I need your help and would you please help me in this situation? I would like to have a chance to live happily and to experience no frustration due to my illness. I am very desperate for your help. If you don’t help me, who will? Thank you, for your understanding and May Allah bless you and your family. Jazak Allah Khayran Yours truly Galib Ramathan

Sorry yo all brothers and sisters i mean at any circumstances we are not allowed to do sin if does deserve punishment not its on ALLAH (swt) on the day of judgement what He will decide for every one but in this world the Khalifa Of time is the best judge so we desperately need to be united at one plateform under one umbrela.

Yes i fully agreed with susan butit is also true that if any nen or women do the sin they deserved the punishment too.Now at this moment we have to know first at what circumstances human being do the sin and the nature of sin that why khalifa of time decide after listening of all details but unfortunately we do not have this opportunity so it is all Muslims duty to come at one platform from all our the world and make one ummah as Allah (swt) wants and select one khalifa of time . Thanks

Hands Down Loss! Sold the deen for a few moments of the dunya. Allah told us that he would send hardship on this ummah so that the hypocrites are exposed! Aal Imran 166 167 Shahideen ala anfusihim bi Al kufr Declarations of disbelief up on themselves, publicly Say the truth, or shut up! Don't utter kufr.

Cultural and tribal values are not Islam. Majority of Muslims support the initiative taken by the Imams and Islamic organizations in Canada. May Allah guide us.

This fatwa proves that the Muslims in Canada are beingressed and bullied. These Imams had to resort to blanketly approve the secular definition of domestic violence and not the Islamic one. They are different. If any of these Imams believe the secular definition is better than Allah's and Allah's Messenger's it expels these Imams, leaders and activists out of Islam, if they've said this out of duress, then I ask Allah to forgive them, strengthen them, empower them and protect them and their families. The classical scholars who were not oppressed like these Imams are have spoken clearly on this matter. Read.

'As Muslims, we base our ethics and behaviour on the teachings of the Quran and the authenticated example of the Prophet Muhammad, who never hit a woman and taught the men that “the best amongst you is he who treats women the best”. The Quran unequivocally emphasizes the sanctity of all life, forbids all forms of coercion in matters of religion, and reminds us all that each of us is accountable for our actions directly to God, the only Judge.' I'm sorry but may I ask you from what qur'an you take the above quotes? I've read the qur'an many times and it says exactly the opposite. Could this be considered as a perfect example of taqiyya?
