The Tessellate Institute Muslim Cool: Instrumentalizing Blackness

November 3, 2017

130 Harbord Street, Toronto, ON M5S 1G8, Canada

Event Description

Tea for Tessellate[TwT] is a small cafe-style conversation series exploring topics of interest to Canadian Muslim at various location in the GTA. TwT aims to carve out a space for engaging community conversations exploring Muslimhood, the intersection of spirituality and identity, and the politics of belonging.

The Tessellate Institute invites you to the upcoming discussion inspired by Dr. Su’ad Abdul Khabeer’s recent release of ‘Muslim Cool’. We intend to explore the notion of ‘the cool’ as it pertains to Muslimhood in the North Atlantic.

ASKING: How does the contemporary cool look, move & feel like? What is Muslim cool? How does the Muslim cultural turn with the rise of mega bloggers and Insta fashion speak to Muslim cool? What kind of social-political work does ‘the cool’ allow/make possible? How does the cultural legacy of Atlantic blackness come into play with the question of Muslim cool?

Join us for an engaging community conversation on these questions and more at Elchi Chai Shop on Friday November 3rd @ 7pm. Bring your friends, your opinions and your appetites. Refreshments will be available for purchase and we encourage you all to try out the incredible menu.
