A Thinking Retreat:
Toronto Muslims: Moving Forward with a Plan
Figures from the 2001 Canadian
census show that the number of Muslim in Canada increased
by 128.9 per cent to more than six hundred thousands. This
makes Islam the fastest growing religion in Canada.
But where will we be in the
next 25 years? What are our short-term goals and long-term
plans? Why have only a few non-Muslims in our area accepted
Islam? Why do only 40 percent of Muslims vote? How can we
enhance our relationship with other communities? How can
our outreach be more effective? What are we contributing
to Canada? Who are our allies in society? Can Muslim groups
coordinate their work better? Who is thinking for us?
Others are definitely thinking
about us. It's about time that we started thinking and developing
long- and short-term plans for Toronto’s Muslims.
Alhamdu lillah, Canada's first
Thinking Retreat was held on June 27 2004. Following are
five presentations and two articles that have been prepared
by the attendees of this retreat:
